Matcha Green Tea May Help Reduce Obesity and Metabolic Disorders by Targeting the Gut–Liver Axis

Obesity caused by a high-fat diet (HFD) is a growing global health concern and is closely associated with a range of metabolic disorders. Matcha green tea, a powdered form of specially cultivated green tea, is rich in tea polyphenols, theanine, caffeine, and other bioactive compounds. Growing evidence suggests that matcha may have beneficial effects on lipid metabolism, blood glucose regulation, and obesity.

In this study, researchers examined the composition and antioxidant properties of matcha green tea and investigated how it affects the gut–liver axis in mice with HFD-induced obesity.

Male C57BL/6J mice aged 7–8 weeks were divided into four groups for an eight-week experiment: a normal chow diet (NCD), a normal chow diet supplemented with 1% matcha (NCM), a high-fat diet (HFD), and a high-fat diet supplemented with 1% matcha (HFM).

                                                                               


The findings showed that matcha supplementation helped reduce several effects associated with a high-fat diet, including body-weight gain, lipid accumulation, and fatty changes in the liver. Matcha also appeared to restore changes in the composition of gut microbiota and fecal bile acids caused by the high-fat diet.

In addition, researchers found that matcha influenced the expression of genes involved in glucose, lipid, and bile acid metabolism in the liver. These findings suggest that the gut–liver axis may play an important role in the potential metabolic benefits of matcha.

Important Note

The study was conducted in male mice, with only five animals per experimental group, and the intervention lasted eight weeks. Therefore, the findings provide promising evidence but do not establish that matcha produces the same effects in humans. Further human clinical studies are needed to determine its effectiveness and appropriate intake.
